Geological field notes (Detroit folio by Sherzer), 1902-1991, 1902-1903.

This record group consists of the geological field notes from the Detroit folio by William Hittell Sherzer. These notes detail observations on such matters as the character of the terrain, type of vegetation, magnetic declination, rock or mineral types, cultural features, readings from well logs, the weather, samples collected, and traverses made. The original field work of Sherzer was initiated to gather geological and hydrological information for the State Geological Survey. This data, along with other information, was used in the compilation of the Detroit folio of the United States Geological Survey. Sherzer's notes were collected during 1902 and 1903 in Wayne County and Canada. They present many interesting details of the life and conditions of that time including the names of many of the inhabitants. Robert E. Mosher transcribed the notes in 1991 and prepared three indexes to accompany the notes.
